Linking Schools
(South Australia and Espoo, Finland)

Global schools networks are not new but the network which South Australia put together was the first to involve children, teachers and parents in thinking about how they could help create a learning community and a learning city. There was interaction locally, regionally and internationally. The results were outstanding. (link to pdf)

Adult Education and Learning City (Papakura/Auckland and Sannois, France)

Adult Education colleges too can contribute to the growth of Learning Cities. Adult learner interaction between and within the participants helped to develop new insights on how this could be implemented.

Cultural Services and Lifelong Learning in the City
(Espoo, Finland and South Queensland)

Museums, Libraries and Galleries have a part to play in transmitting the message of lifelong learning and the learning city to citizens. This project developed a set of portable display boards on the subject and invited feedback from visitors. Awareness, insight, mobilisation and involvement

Elected Representatives (Councillors)
(CEFEL, France and South Australia)

What do councillors need to know about learning cities and their role in helping them grow? This sub-project created some innovative learning materials that helped to find some of the answers despite different methods of governance in different countries.

Building a Lifelong Learning Facility for all in a city suburb (Beijing)

The City of Beijing is constructing a lifelong learning facility bringing together the different sectors from schools, adult education, business and industry, voluntary organisations and others in a suburb of 800,000 people. The insights the city gained from the international interaction in PALLACE were invaluable to this project.

Creating new learning communities through public/private partnerships
(Queensland and South Australia)

North of Adelaide and South of Brisbane new developments are incorporating lifelong learning into the built environment as a means of fostering community involvement and learning. The partnerships between public and private have offered insights beyond these two participants

Communicating the Learning Community Message (Edmonton and Auckland/Papakura)

A learning city will comprise many different learning communities. This sub-project explored some of the methods and practices of learning community development in Canada and elsewhere and, in particular, how to communicate those messages to the citizens.

The results of these seven pioneering sub-projects are now gathering dust on a European Commission shelf. Alternatively you can find them here. (link to pdf file).
